What is the damn point? So they play 16-18 conference games that decide who is the conference champion, and then we find the need to play a tournament after that, where a team can find its groove and get lucky to the tune of a "conference championship."
Lets use an anology: Imagine if David Stern said "Ok guys you're still going to play 82 games but after that, we're going to have division tournaments in between your grueling regular season and your grueling playoffs. The winner of this tournament will get an at large berth to the playoffs. Those of you who have played well all year and already have earnerd a real playoff berth must go to this tournament and play 4 games in 4 days and risk injury and fatigue less than a week before the real playoffs start, with very little to gain!" It sounds ludicrous doesn't it? He'd be impeached immediately.
My point is: if I was a good basketball team who has had a good season, I would stay at home and forfeit, and let the guys I'm gonna play next week beat up on each other.

March 8

If someone said "Bernard, who is the least likely player to get suspended for banned substance?" As you know, the PG situation is currently rubbish. Why not have athletes like Hughes at least make the other team think there's a chance at offense coming from the "1"? The Cavs have no chance with Eric Snow logging huge minutes....here's an answer.
Why not pick up Jay Williams? There's a chance he isn't interested, but if he is, why the hell doesn't someone pick him up. Did you see him play back in the day? I don't care if he broke his hip and hasn't played, I guarantee you he is better than Eric Snow. Its hard to believe that people like Keith McLeod and Darrick Martin have jobs, but the Nets cut Jay lose?!?!
Anyway, I'm starting to read "Taking Shots" from Keith Glass (NBA Agent). I'm pretty excited about this, despite the fact that its a book. The first line in the description is "Bring a family of four to an NBA game today, and it costs around $500 to watch a bunch of seven footers take bad shots." Interesting take from a man in the know. Look for a review when I finish it in about 6 months.

It's About Time

Last couple of games, Mike Brown has changed something.

something I've been wanting him to do for the past year or 2. He moved Larry Hughes to the point. Since the Cavs picked up Larry Hughes, people have complained that he hasn't been involved in their system and that he doesn't fit in. How it took them this long to move him to the point is beyone me. What better way to get someone more involved than to have him run the point? To have 6-5 Hughes run the point guard is a WIN-WIN. He's just as good of a defender as Eric Snow and is obviously faster, stronger, better offensively,etc.... I just have to finally tip my hat to Mike Brown even if it did come 2 years too late.

Danny Granger

Granger had a nice game, and could turn out to be a nice player. But he is a perfect example of one of those guys who for some reason got some positive publicity after the draft, and now everything jumped on his bandwagon. "Can you believe Granger fell so low, the Pacers got a steal!" "Granger, from New Mexico, has all star potential!" "Granger has the makings to become a Reggie Miller type playing in Indiana!"
These are the types of things we heard after he was drafted. Ever since, the Danny Granger bandwagon has been stuffed to the rafters. The guy next to me at the game: "I think this Danny Granger is going to be real good." Me: "No, you like everyone else, don't know shit about Danny Granger, but you've read that he is going to be real good." Listen, he's got decent numbers (13 points, 5 boards, 45% from the field) and he could turn out to be a nice role player in the future, but please don't memorize some shit you heard on tv or read on hoopshype and pretend you came up with it.

Suns Pacers 3/2

Just went to the Suns Pacers game tonight at USAC. Couple of notes:

-Could we please pass a law that no girls under the age of 16 can attend a basketball game. No exceptions! Putting in this mandate is really a no lose situation. They don't want to be there, noone wants to take them, and fans shouldnt have to put up with their screeching, bickering, and whining when they're trying to enjoy NBA basketball.

-On a related note, the halftime show consisted of about 100 girls ages 4-10 cheerleading. Listen, god bless 'em, but does anyone in the world enjoy these parades of ineptitude? Cheerleaders are supposed to be eye candy for us, not 6 years old. I don't know, maybe the Asian lady who flips bowls onto her head cancelled, and the best thing they could find was the Central Phoenix PrePubescent Dance Line to replace her on short notice.

ONTO THE GAME:
-The Pacers are one of the least athletic NBA teams in recent memory. Danny Granger is probably a marginal athlete, but you wouldn't know because he just j-s from 25 feet the entire time. Their best athlete might be white, Mike Dunleavy (who, while athletic, still sucks). Not a good sign.
I realize athleticism doesn't make everything, but against a team like the Suns, it stands out.

-Jermaine O'Neal had a bad game, but he is good. The rest of those pieces are trash. Foster, Dunleavy, Granger (more on him in a second), Tinsley, Armstrong, and Murphy. These guys all have two qualities. A, they're bad. And B, they log big minutes. Again, not a great sign. Any time the possession doesn't go through him, its a wasted possession.

-For you Pacers fans, one bright spot....Marquis Daniels is good. He is adept at slithering into the lane and putting some random slop into the basket. I hope, for his sake, the defenders don't figure out that he can't hit a 20 footer.

March 2007

The site is starting to come around.
